Retinal log polar topology of the eye

Scheme of retinal topology (the picture shows only 8 orientations), each point is the center of receptive field.

[H. Araujo et J. M. Dias] An Introduction to the Log-Polar Mapping

One interesting feature of the human visual system is the topological transformation of the retinal image into its cortical projection.

The excitation of the cortex can be approximated by a log-polar mapping of the eye’s retinal image. [H. Araujo et J. M. Dias] An Introduction to the Log-Polar Mapping

See what's happen to the topology when we transform   the retina  with a log-polar mapping :

Image processing - 2D log Gabor wavelets

Log Gabor filters are excellent high-pass filters for the visual system.  They simulate receptive fields of the simple cells of the primary visual cortex (V1) of primates.

Log Gabor filters in the Fourier domain with 3 scales and 8 orientations. Designed with Grapher Version 2.5

5 Extracted log Gabor filters in the Fourier domain.
